“26 798 people visited Sõrve lighthouse, which continues to be the most popular lighthouse. It’s a pleasure to see that lighthouses are still of great interest to Estonians,” said Andres Unn, Manager of the Administrative Department of the Estonian Transport Administration.
For the second year in a row, Sõrve lighthouse was followed in popularity by Kõpu lighthouse, one of the three oldest operational lighthouses in the world, which saw 22,921 visitors. The top five also included Tahkuna (9724 visitors), Kihnu (6300 visitors) and Ristna (4768 visitors) lighthouses.
As of 2022, both Suurupi lighthouses have been closed, but the renovated Ruhnu lighthouse reopened in the same year.
All the operating lighthouses in Estonia, 55 in total, are owned by the Estonian Transport Administration. Eleven lighthouses are open to visitors in the summer: Sõrve, Kõpu, Vormsi (Saxby), Ristna, Tahkuna, Pakri, Ruhnu, Kihnu, Osmussaare, Naissaare, and Vilsandi lighthouses.
Preparations for opening the Narva-Jõesuu lighthouse are underway, and the plan is also to find an operator for the two lighthouses in Tallinn to open them to visitors after renovation.
