More than 90,000 vehicles at risk of automatic removal from the traffic register

The Transport Administration is preparing for a large-scale removal of vehicles from the register. On 1 November, 91,538 vehicles with a suspended registration entry will be removed from the register based on the status as of the end of October.

In July this year, the Transport Administration mapped vehicles with a suspended registration entry whose status had remained unchanged for seven or more years. Under the Traffic Act, these are considered lost vehicles and will therefore be removed from the traffic register.

In the summer, there were 97,668 such vehicles in the traffic register, of which 72,488 belonged to categories that will be subject to motor vehicle tax from 2027. Customers have taken action over the past three months, but 91,538 vehicles are still due to be removed from the register. Of these, 68,053 are vehicles that will become subject to the tax from next year.

“We urge customers to check the vehicles associated with them. If there is a vehicle with a suspended registration entry among them, we ask that they take action as soon as possible. There are several options available, depending on what they intend to do with the vehicle,” explained Martin Meltsas, Service Manager at the Transport Administration.

If a person has a vehicle with a suspended registration entry that they wish to keep, the vehicle must be temporarily removed from the register through the Transport Administration’s e-service. During the temporary removal process, the customer will be directed to prove the existence of the vehicle using the photo application. The same procedure can also be completed at Transport Administration service offices. Alternatively, the vehicle can be put back into active use by passing a roadworthiness test and taking out a motor third-party liability insurance policy.

If the vehicle is physically in the person’s possession and its registration entry is suspended, but they do not wish to keep it, the vehicle must be taken to a waste management company cooperating with the Transport Administration. The vehicle will then be removed from the traffic register free of charge. A list of waste management companies cooperating with the Transport Administration can be found HERE.

To ensure that people are aware of the automatic removal of these vehicles from the register, the Transport Administration has also notified vehicle owners by email.

From 2027, motor vehicle tax will apply to vehicles with a suspended registration entry. In addition, the state fee for removing a vehicle from the traffic register without a certificate of destruction will increase to €800. This year, the same procedure can be carried out for a state fee of €15.

Further information about removing vehicles from the traffic register is available on the Transport Administration’s website.
