Information is also increasingly reaching the Transport Administration regarding the online sale of self-made number plates, where the reduced size of the number plates has been made to fit the size of a normal number plate, or vice versa. The emblem of the EU and the Estonian national code (EST) are also missing.
“The use of such registration plates on vehicles is illegal,” said Sander Jürgenson, the Service Manager in the Vehicle Registration Department of the Transport Administration. “The Traffic Act stipulates that number plates used on the roads may only be manufactured by a company that has won a tender organised by the Transport Administration. No one else has the right to do so.”
There has been more and more forging of number plates with reduced dimensions (type A3), which have also been used in the size of registration plates for cars and trailers (type A1).
Lieutenant Colonel Sirle Loigo from the Estonian police says the Traffic Act provides for a fine of up to €800 for driving a vehicle with a self-made number plate. “You wouldn’t buy an ID document from someone random on the Internet, and the same principle applies to vehicle documents and number plates,” she said. Official number plates are solely issued by the Transport Administration.”
