Ships departing from the Port of Sillamäe are using route through the territorial sea of the Russian Federation, as this route is safer for large vessels compared to navigating through the shallows in Estonian waters.
Such a safe maritime route for vessels, which does not follow the borders of the countries, has been agreed upon between Russia, Estonia, and Finland.
To avoid similar incidents in the future, the Vessel Traffic Management Department of the Estonian Transport Administration, together with maritime pilots, will direct ships to and from Sillamäe through Estonia's territorial waters.
Green Admire is owned by the Greek company Aegean Shipping. At the time of departure from Sillamäe, the ship was carrying shale oil and its destination was Rotterdam.
