Over the past year and a half, with the support of vehicle owners, the Estonian Transport Administration has carried out extensive work to ensure that the traffic register is as accurate and up to date as possible. One of the largest register clean-up operations will take place this November, when, according to the current data, 97,668 vehicles will be removed from the register. Of these, 72,488 belong to categories that will become subject to the motor vehicle tax from 2027 onwards.
"In July, the Transport Administration identified vehicles with suspended registration entries whose registration data have remained unchanged for seven years or longer. These are the vehicles that will be automatically removed from the register on 1 November unless the owner decides to update the registration entry," explained Märten Surva, Head of the Vehicle Registration Department at the Estonian Transport Administration.
To ensure that vehicle owners are aware of the upcoming automatic removal from the register, the Transport Administration has started sending direct notifications to the affected parties. To ensure these notifications are delivered without issues, we recommend that customers verify and update their contact details in our e-service.
"If you own a vehicle that you wish to retain in the register, you must apply through our e-service or at a service office to replace the suspended registration entry with a temporary deletion entry in order to avoid automatic removal. This can conveniently be done by submitting photographic evidence. It is also possible to restore the registration entry by passing the mandatory roadworthiness inspection and taking out a valid motor third-party liability insurance policy," Surva added.
We would also like to remind vehicle owners that, from 2027, the motor vehicle tax will also apply to vehicles with suspended registration entries. In addition, the state fee for removing a vehicle from the traffic register without a certificate of destruction will increase to €800. Until the end of this year, the same procedure can still be completed by paying a state fee of €15.
